Week 2 Review

Written by Wendi

Do you ever have those bad dreams where College Football Saturdays get upended and throws everything off balance?  Well folks, if you do, your dreams became a reality.  I mean Notre Dame losing to Marshall in what did not even seem like a competition. Glad that game was not on the picks.  I imagine we all would have been in the 8-10 point range.  And with that loss, they were completely dropped out of the rankings and Marcus Freeman started his head coaching career there at 0-3.  Texas A&M losing to Appalachian State.  Well I, as a Michigan fan, don’t feel AS bad.  Texas A&M struggled heavily on offense.  If they keep that up, they may have a rough road ahead, especially when conference play starts.

On a weird Saturday, three top 10 teams went down and A LOT of FBS schools lost to FCS schools.  I mentioned 2 up above and Baylor went down to a ranked BYU team late Saturday night.  And now I must address the "elephant” in the room (no pun intended).   No, Texas is NOT BACK, Alabama just really hurt themselves and underachieved.  Between penalties and the offensive line, it’s a wonder they squeaked out the win.  And let’s not talk about all the dropped passes.  With a late drive, Texas was unable to tackle and set Alabama up nicely to kick the field goal to win 20-19.  It was no surprise, that the lackluster performance from Alabama, they dropped to #2 in the rankings.  But what I can’t figure out is how does Texas goes from unranked to being ranked after a loss?  I’m baffled by that.

In a thriller between Tennessee and Pittsburgh that took it to overtime, Tennessee’s defense showed up when it mattered and won 34-27.  With that, Tennessee starts the season 2-0.   Would things have turned out differently if Pittsburgh’s starting QB stayed in the game?  At one point they had the 3rd stringer in until the backup was able to go back in.  But even still, the backup QB was limping the rest of the game and couldn’t stop Tennessee’s rushers.

After a long weather delay, Kansas State was able to win out 40-12 over Missouri.  Northwestern had their hands full with an improving Duke team.  Watch out ACC.  Not really.  After shutting out Illinois State last week 38-0, 19th ranked Wisconsin had no answer for the Cougars up in Washington State in a low scoring game 17-14.  Wisconsin had outgained the Cougars in total yards, time of possession, 1st downs and each team had 3 turnovers.  But sometimes, those turnovers can be costly as in the case with Wisconsin.

The 25th ranked (not any more) Houston Cougars traveled to Lubbock and had to take it into double overtime and lost 33-30.  Although I am not sure if that win would warrant the lowering of the goal posts.  But in this case, it did and the fans stormed the field.  Texas Tech faces a feisty NC State next week.  Can they keep the momentum going?  USC rolled past Stanford as we all predicted (uhhh…except Noah).  Even though the final was 41-28, it felt a lot closer to me.  USC is off to a great start and will we see if Lincoln Riley’s new home in California will stand the wildfires (figuratively) that comes with USC.  Oklahoma State was able to get the "W” over Arizona State 34-17.  Does anyone else like that bright orange on the field for their logo or is it just me?  In a game I thought would have been a close one, Illinois beat Virginia 24-3.  Who would have thought?

DUMB PLAY OF THE WEEK:  Did anyone see the game between South Carolina and Arkansas?  If you have not heard, South Carolina’s player was running with the ball down the sideline.  Instead of being tackled by Arkansas, his own teammate decides to make the stop.  Maybe he forgot what team he was on?

On to the picks…

With the 2nd week down in the books, it is still anyone’s game.  There is a tight race at the top and pretty soon, there should be some separation.  Can Stemple stay on top?  Can Mike stay up top long enough?  But I have a feeling, history will repeat itself and Mike will go tumbling down and then will blame Emma for having him distracted.

The usual suspects are at the bottom.  The 2 kids and the 2 lovebirds.  Marc and Mom find themselves in a peculiar spot when they were at the top last year.  But mom made some headway and is starting to go north in the rankings.  I am waiting on people ahead of me to take a fall so I am patiently waiting in 3rd.  Cindy is in 4th but 5 points behind me.

Has anyone ever noticed that when David tally’s up the totals, if there is a tie and his name is in that tie, he puts himself first?  I mean normally, you would alphabetize. Go back and look at the weekly and the group.  Makes you wonder.  Maybe someone else needs to be in charge of that aspect.  I call foul.  Oh, and David, I don’t care if you have baseball practice or not.  You need to be updating those scores. Me and Cindy got tired of refreshing and waiting.  LOL  If you pay me, I will do it.

For the week, what do the bottom 3 have in common?  They all lost 5 games in a row.

Most points for the week:  Mom and Noah tied at 35.  Even though Noah scored the most, he is still in last.  That’s ok Noah, Megan and Sean will be calling you this week for advice.

Least points for the week:  Sean and Cindy tied with 27 points.  To be fair, even though they were at the bottom, they were only 8 points from the top.  I am just trying to help ya’ll sleep better tonight knowing that.

Best pick of the week:  Noah was the only one to pick App State over Texas A&M.  That helped him earn the top spot while everyone else lost out on some BIG points.

Worst pick of the week:  What was Noah thinking going 6 on Stanford.  David, I thought you taught your kid better than that.

Here are the rankings:

1.Mike -82 points

2.David - 81 points

3.Stemple - 81 points

4.Adam - 81 points

5.Wendi - 80 points

6.Cindy - 75 points

8.Marc - 73 points

9.Samuel - 71 points

10.Sean - 70 points
