"Week 1 Recap”

Written by Wendi

Well, it is that time of year again! College football is back!  Along with high anxiety, panic, excitement, depression, uncertainty, just to name a few.  Now that the dust has settled after week 1, I can almost place each of us in those emotional categories.    I do have a question though.  Will there be an overseas opening game every year?  Asking for a friend and the relevance on playing overseas!

Friday got us started with two marquee matchups.  Auburn traveled to Waco, Texas to take on the Bears of Baylor.  Unlike last year, Auburn put on an impressive defensive and offensive performance under transfer quarterback Jackson Arnold.  Can they contend in the SEC this year?  Time will tell.  Auburn got the dub 38-24.  Colorado hosted Georgia Tech without star players Travis Hunter and Prime Time’s son as QB.  As you know, they went off to the NFL.  Will they have success this year without those playmakers?  A late touchdown put GT ahead 27-20 and Colorado botched their clock management with a minute left in the game.   You had two timeouts left?  Why let the clock run out????

Week 1 was full of surprises and has all but solidified that certain dynasties are a thing of the past.  Can we literally talk about the elephant in the room?  In DeBoer’s second season with the Tide, fans are questioning was he the right hire?  Some say no!  Some say give him another year!  Your thoughts?  If I am not mistaken, the buyout is high!  I saw somewhere it was $70 million.  I don’t care really so I didn’t want to waste my time researching.

Offensively, I was not impressed with either Texas or Ohio State ("THE” reigning champs…I must admit that made me vomit just typing it).  With a score of 14-7, it was pretty clear.  You could say the defenses looked great but really, the offenses were just terrible.  Arch Manning showed no signs he should have been the preseason Heisman front runner.  And honestly, neither team looked the part of #1 and #3 in the country.  That is why preseason rankings are a joke.  I am trying hard not to show my bias but I literally hate both teams.  Ugh!  Sorry Chris.

Northwestern is still looking like last year’s 4-8 team.  Tulane easily beat them in New Orleans 23-3 with BYU transfer QB Jake Retzlaff (which if you are interested and do not know, look up why he transferred).  They put up 20 of those points in the first half and then it looks like they just took the foot off the pedal.  Oh, and Northwestern had a total of 5 turnovers.  Yikes!

So, is it safe to say you were rooting for a Tiger win in Death Valley?  Wait, which Tigers and which Death Valley?  That would be Clemson hosting LSU in a top 10 matchup.  With a 10-7 halftime lead, Clemson does what they always do.  Absolutely nothing and fall apart in the second half.  LSU looked better all around and may be a contender this year if they keep it up.  Final LSU 17-10.

The UTEP and Utah State game was not televised for me so all I can do is look at <checks notes> stats online.  Final 28-16.  A late Saturday night matchup between Cal and Oregon State left the Beavers in heartbreak…again.  I did not watch this game either but looking at the game plays, there was a lot of turnover on downs, punts and two turnovers for the Beavers.  I bet you still wish you had DJ U as QB huh?

South Carolina has continued to shine under Shane Beamer from last year.  He played his dad’s former team and Alma Mater Sunday night in Atlanta and did not miss a beat.  Gamecocks won 24-11.  Notre Dame played Miami under sloppy wet conditions as it poured down rain early in the game.  This was a big game for Mario Cristobal and his team had not beaten a top 10 ranked team….in a while…Wonder if Carson Beck is glad he left Georgia?  Miami won 27-24.

Takeaways from Week 1 – There were 4 ranked teams in the top 8 that lost this weekend.

On to the pick em’s…..

Sam did not miss a beat from last year.  He finished 1st in the regular season and is now tied for first with Adam.  Did I mention he is only 12??  So embarrassing.  Do not get used to it Sammy Boy!  You would not be able to last the whole season at the top.

I get that this is the first week and with the landscape of the sport keep changing every year, it is hard to judge the first week.  All in all, I think we fared decent.  Unless your name is Evelyn.  Noah had a rough showing by nailing only one of his first six games.  For those that went high on Alabama, was it because FSU only won two games last year?  No, Texas is CLEARLY not back.  The Meggers family had a good showing with two in the top five spots.  Pick up the pace Mike M.  We need some new winners this year.

Does it pay off to stick 10 points on your team?  It worked out for Mike H.  Let us look at who it DIDN’T work out for – Chris, Cindie, Marc, Noah, Evelyn.  I got 10 on Michigan this week.  Go big or go home, right?

Most points for the week:  Adam was Sam tied with 41 points and lost out on some dough.  The $10 will roll over to next week for $20.

Least points for the week:  Evelyn with 8 points?  Last year, Mike M. forgot to do is picks one week and scored ZERO.  You scored only 8 points more and you did ALL of your picks.  Let that sink in.

Best pick of the week:  Sam & Adam not having confidence in their team actually worked in their favor.  Allllll those high points on Bama were lost.

Worst pick of the week:  Everything Evelyn did, don’t do.  Please!

Letters to the Editor:

"FSU is back”

I just have a feeling you are wrong and that there is a certain FSU fan in this group that will be making a trip to Home Depot for a ladder and rope in a few weeks.

"Does anyone know what the ticket prices are going to be for the Alabama vs D.A. Smith Middle School matchup this week?”

Considering the prices are $7 for the middle school at home any other game, my guess is $7.

"Is Texas back?”

Absolutely…but today is opposite day!

Here are the rankings after Week 1:

1.       Sam – 41 points

2.       Adam – 41 points

3.       Mike H. – 40 points

4.       Rick – 38 points

5.       Sean – 37 points

6.       Wendi – 34 points

7.       David – 32 points

8.       Kim – 31 points
