Week 4 Review

Written by Wendi

This Saturday did not disappoint.  In a back-and-forth game between Clemson and Wake Forest, Clemson’s D finally was able to stop them on 4th down in 2OT.   After the game, Coach Swinney stated he aged 10 years.  I think we can all agree that we did as well.  With Sam being the only one who picked Wake Forest, he ALMOST had us.  The Baylor Bears and the Iowa State Cyclones had a physical fight in Ames and the Bears came out on top 31-24.  Ames, Iowa has always been a tricky place to play. Especially if you come in ranked and Iowa State isn’t.  For those that picked Iowa State, it was not your day.

In state rivals, SMU and TCU went at it and the Horned Frogs came out on top 42-34.  It didn’t help that SMU’s QB and best receiver played hurt in the second half.  Now that Tennessee has slain the drag..…..I mean the Gator for the 2nd time in 18 years, they have cracked the top 10 in rankings.  As they sit at #8, do they really belong there?  I mean, Florida has had issues on offense, they played Ball State, Akron and at the time, Pittsburg was ranked #17.  Tennessee has a bye week and travels to LSU on October 8th.  And yes, I would expect that game to be on the picks that week.

I will say this once and many more times if I need to.  I HATE NOTRE DAME.  Always have, always will.  Yes, I get that North Carolina had ZERO defense that game but Notre Dame looked like the 10th best team in America.  Ok, maybe not, but a lot of us needed a Mack Brown win.  Notre Dame marched into Chapel Hill and won 45-32 after a much-improved offense.

After the shellacking that Washington gave Michigan State, you would think the Spartans would come out against Minnesota with a chip on its shoulder.  Nope!  The Terrapins held them scoreless until the last 17 seconds of the game.  Minnesota won 34-7.  What in the name of Sam Hill is going on in East Lansing Mel Tucker? Michigan State plays a feisty Maryland this weekend that gave Michigan a rough go this past Saturday.

Bo Nix who also throws pix sixes was able to storm back and beat Washington State 44-41 with a late pick 6 to seal the deal.  They scored a combined 43 points in the 4th quarter alone.  Who needs defense in the Pac-12?  Just make sure you score the most, right?  As if Rutgers had a chance against Iowa.  Only fools would have picked Rutgers.  Oh wait……  I guess I can’t talk about Sam like that.  The Hawkeyes were able to prove they can score more than field goals and safeties.  Final was 27-10.  But, looks can be deceiving.  Rutgers had three turnovers and Iowa was able to capitalize off of two of them.

A lot of us were unsure what to make of the Troy and Marshall game.  Honestly, I think it was a coin flip.  Troy did almost beat App State last week if not for the now infamous hail mary and yes Marshall did beat Notre Dame.  Trojans won outright 16-7 in a low scoring affair.  A late thriller between Texas A&M and Arkansas, the Hogs thought it would be a good idea to leap from like 5 yards out on a 1st down nonetheless to reach the end zone.  The end result – fumble recovered by A & M for a touchdown.  After being down 14-0, the Aggies needed all the momentum it could get.  The Aggies were able to win 23-21.

UPSETS OF THE WEEK (that weren’t on our picks):  Texas Tech brought down the goal post on Texas 37-34 in OT.  Kansas State beat Oklahoma 41-34.  Middle Tennessee beat Miami IN Miami IN the rain 45-31.  First time the Blue Raiders beat an AP ranked team.

On to the pick’ems….

If your name is NOT Noah, it could have been really bad for a lot of us.  Can you imagine if Clemson, Tennessee and Oregon lost?  Most of us had our 8-10’s on those picks.  Adam was able to hold on to the lead by getting 40 points.  But if he has a bad week this week, will he blame it on the incoming hurricane he will most likely get?  Or will it be because David put FSU on the picks?  After all, that is David’s only way of insuring Adam drops.  Right Adam?  David was able to take 2nd place from me with his 44 points for the week.  I now sit behind him 7 points in 3rd place.  I will make up for it this week.

Although mom tied for the 2nd most points, she is still down at the Kiddy table and 26 points from 1st. You will need a lot more good weeks to gain some traction.  Mike and Stemple aren’t doing themselves any favors still by staying in the middle of the pack.  And Sean, I may not want you to win in pick’ems, but I sure wanted your Beavers to upset USC.  Looks like you are still down on your luck being tied with Cindy and Marc towards the bottom.  But hey Sean, you should feel lucky you married a swell gal like Megan, right?

So, I have looked at this week’s picks.  Who thought last week was tough?  David, it would be nice to give us a least one easy pick every now and then.  The spots are thinning out and many folks need some good weeks to catch up.  Luckily, there were no hiccups with greening the games like last week.  David, we are glad you were able to do it.  Mike’s only excuse was "EMMA”.  Nothing else was said but "EMMA”.  Hey Mike, what happened to all the scores?  "EMMA”.  Hey Mike, how many more minutes will you update the scores?  "EMMA”.

We are heading into week 5 and there have already been a lot of coaches fired.  Georgia Tech just fired their AD and head coach.  Boise State has fired their OC.  We all know Scott Frost was fired a couple of weeks ago.  Arizona State has fired their head coach due to lackluster season and an ongoing investigation.  Kansas is still undefeated.  Let’s say that again.  KANSAS IS STILL UNDEFEATED!

Here’s to looking forward to another awful weekend in picks.

Most points for the week:  David had an astounding 44 points.  How does that even happen?  Insider trading?  Well, we all have the screen shot proof that he was at his bookie’s office the other day.  I think we need to keep an eye on him.

Least points for the week:  Noah had only 18 points this week.  Hey Noah, stick to Baseball.  I heard you are better at that.

Best pick of the week:  Stemple, Megan and Noah going Minnesota over Michigan State.  Us dumb folks thought Michigan State would play better than last week.  NOPE!

Worst pick of the week:  9 on Rutgers Megan?  I mean, WHY?

Here are the rankings:

1.Adam -161 points

2.David - 154 points

3.Wendi - 147 points

4.Megan – 143 points

5.Mike - 141 points
