Football is FINALLY Here!
Written by Wendi

It’s that time of year.  The time where family comes together, they yell, they throw things, they eat good food and cheer for their team.  Well, some were not cheering after week 1.  With the addition of the winner each week getting $10, there are new clock rules in regulation.  That could either be a good thing or a bad thing but if the intent was to make the games go by quicker… it seemed to work.

So in an unusual start, our night started on Thursday with Florida making the trip to Utah.  In what appeared to be a big dose of Karma, one Gator player infamously tweeted making fun of Utah’s stadium before the game and quickly deleted it after the game.  Bet he won’t make that mistake again as Florida sputtered the whole game.  They showed greatness at points but followed it up with boneheaded play calling and could not get out of their own way. Utah went on to beat them 24-11.

Tennessee struggled early on against Virginia but found their way and went on to win 49-13 in Virginia’s first game since the tragic shooting last fall that left 3 football players dead and one injured.  With a new quarterback at the helm in Michigan transfer Cade McNamara, Iowa showed progress on the offensive side of the ball.  It wasn’t always pretty but Iowa won 24-14.

Purdue got more than they bargained for when they decided to host Fresno State.  In a back and forth game that would go down to the end, Fresno State got the victory 39-35 and all but one of us lost out on some points.  *cough cough, Noah*.

In what I thought would have been a good game, Washington steamrolled Boise State.  Boise State led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter but it was all Huskies after that and went on to win 56-19.  Should be an interesting season in what appears to be the last for the Pac-12 due to conference realignment.  Which I hate by the way.  I don’t like change.  What started off as a nail biter quickly turned into a blowout between North Texas and Cal.  I think a lot of us were not sure what to make of this game.  Cal held the Mean Green scoreless in the second half and won outright 58-21.

Houston and UTSA was another game that was a 50/50 tossup.  UTSA had a great season last year winning 11 games.  Could they do it again this year?  Despite 751 total yards, the defense’s kept the score 17-14.  Ok, and maybe UTSA’s three turnovers.  Needless to say Houston got the win for the second straight season opener over UTSA.

The big game Saturday night.  The Primetime game.  The Duke’s Mayo Bowl.  The game that determines who is the best, North or South…..  Well after nine (9) sacks, the gamecocks went back to the chicken pen to regroup losing to the Tarheels 31-17.  Yes folks, 9 sacks.  Can we work on that O-Line this week?  I think this was the game a lot of people were excited to see.  I mean, South Carolina beat Clemson and Tennessee last year so one would assume this year they would be great.  Well, you know what "ass (outta) u (and) me” means.

Penn State had no problem getting past West Virginia 38-15 which really wasn’t a surprise.  The big game on Sunday night between LSU and FSU was just that at halftime with LSU leading 17-14.  It was turning out to be a really good game.  However, Brian Kelly & Co. looked like they wanted to get back to Baton Rouge and had no interest in finishing the game and got out played, out coached, and downright slaughtered in the second half.  A big win for the ‘Noles 45-24.

Football is back Ya’ll.

FUN FACT:  No team in the Pac 12 has been beaten yet.  They are all undefeated.

On to the pick’ems….

Okay, so this whole $10 a week thing should be canceled.  I mean, how do we let a 9-year-old win it the first week.  If you ask me, I think it is rigged.  David came up with the idea.  It would look unfair if he won it, so he did Noah’s picks so Noah could win.  That is my story and I am sticking to it.
But seriously, if your name is not Stemple, Marc, Mike, Cindy & Sean, you had a great first week.  So, give yourself a pat on the back.
Thanks to an FSU win, it allowed Adam and Sam to claim second and third place.  Sam better enjoy it while he can.  If history has any say so, third place will be the highest he will ever see.  Wait, I think the same can be said about Adam?  Hmmmmmm………

Myself and Mom are tied at fourth.  I won last year but can I be like Georgia and win it twice in a row?  Or could all of that metal in mom start giving her psychic abilities for her to win again?  I mean it has been a while since she has won.  And look at who is not in the top 3.  That would be David.  How does it feel?  Does it sting a little?  David, your days of reining are over.   You better get use to it.

Megan and Sean follow behind David.  It’s cute that you two are sticking together.  Don’t want to succeed without the other?  That’s called LOVE.  And Cindy, this will be the last time I say it.  Quit being so conservative.  You have to take risks.   HAHA!

And for the bottom three that scored less than 40 points, I have faith that next week, you will be in the top three.  You will have such a great week that you all will tie for first and win the $10.  Ok, I couldn’t even type that without laughing.  Seriously, DO BETTER.

Most points for the week:  Noah won $10 by nailing 51 points.  That may be a record high for him.

Least points for the week:  Marc was only able to net 33 points.  After one week, he already has a lot of ground to make up.

Best pick of the week:   With Noah’s pick on Fresno State, it meant we all lost out of some points.  Some of those were costly to us.

Worst pick of the week:  Only Stemple and Mike know why they went North Texas and Boise State respectively.  But seriously, can you tell us why?

Here are the rankings:
1.Noah - 51 points
2.Adam - 49 points
3.Sam - 48 points
4. Mom - 47 points
4. Wendi - 47 points
5.David - 46 points
6.Megan - 44 points
7.Sean - 42 points
8.Cindy - 41 points
9.Mike - 39 points
10.Stemple - 36 points
11. Marc - 33 points

Good luck this week!  There is already an 18-point difference from first to last.
