The Week 7 Aftermath
Written by David
The Aftermath of Week 7 was sudden and apparent.
In the Big 10, #2 Michigan, #3 Ohio State, and #6 Penn State continued their murderous ways. But let’s face it, outside of Ohio State, the others haven’t played a team with a pulse yet. That will change this week as Penn State travels to Ohio State.
It wasn’t on the picks, but Michigan State blew an 18-point lead to Rutgers and lost 27-24. Rutgers scored 21 points in the final quarter to stun the Spartans. There are a lot of fans in the State of Michigan  not happy with the Spartan performance overall.
Texas A&M fans are already calling on their head coach Jimbo Fisher to be fired after losing on the road to #19 Tennessee 20-13. The talented Aggies are now 4-3 heading into a bye week while the Vols improve to 5-1 overall.
Alabama fans have come to accept that this year’s Crimson Tide Team can’t play four quarters of football as they snuck by the Arkansas Razorbacks 24-21. Up next is Tennessee.
The Big 12’s newly added teams (BYU, Houston, UCF, & Cincinnati) are doing horrible things in their new conference. Combined they are 2-10 in conference play. This week, BYU got destroyed by TCU 44-11. Cincinnati got whacked 30-10 at home by Iowa State. The only bright spot was Houston stunning West Virginia 41-39 on a miracle 4th down Hail Mary touchdown pass.
The Pac 12 featured a top 10 match-up in #8 Oregon at #7 Washington. In a back and forth game, Oregon left 6-points off the board after attempting two 4th down conversions that failed deep in Husky territory. Washington would win the game by three, 36-33. Fortunately, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning took responsibility for the loss and for the game costly decisions.
The Pac-12’s flagship program, #10 USC, hit the road to take on #21 Notre Dame. It was a disastrous start for the Heisman winner Caleb Williams who threw an interception in his first offensive series, which led to a Notre Dame score a few moments later. Williams ended up throwing three picks. The Irish ended up thumping the Trojans 48-20. The Irish were in control of this game from the start.
There was a good Mountain West battle for control of the conference as Air Force was able to fend off Wyoming 34-27. The Fighting Falcons are still unbeaten and now ranked #22 in the AP Poll.
On to the picks…
Noah is like a bad case of herpes for Wendi that just won’t go away. Just when you thought you had taken care of the problem, it flares up again only to come on stronger.
It was just a matter of time, but Wendi finally got rocked. She was doing a tremendous job of navigating through some very challenging weeks unscathed, but she finally succumbed to Week 7. Right out of the gate, she lost her 9-point pick on Cincinnati, and it went down hill from there. But don’t feel too sorry for her, she’s only 1-point from the top.
However, the kids are beginning to become a problem. Gone are the days that we automatically assumed they would shift to the bottom once the contest started heating up. Now they are taking the top spot and winning weekly prizes that the adults should be winning. Combined, they have collected $40 in prize money. Something tells me that they’re not done yet. And don’t think for a moment that Sam is down and out. Heck, I’m currently trying to work myself out of a hole but can’t seem to because I’m locked in a sword fight with Sam for my 6th place spot. Let’s not forget that Sam is already doing better than five other adults who can’t seem to get their act together.
Very quietly, Megan is moving up and is only 11 points from the top. She did that crap last year and ended up taking 2nd place.
It’s getting discussed in small circles, but Mike seems to be doing unusually well this late into the contest. Normally he’ll flirt near the top the first few weeks until an atomic bomb is dropped on his picks which sends him back into the stone age where he never recovers. You just get the feeling that his time is running out.
Cindie is on the elevator going down after apparently accepting Stemple’s and Sean’s invitation to the bottom where there’s weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Most Points for the week: Marc finally decided to pick himself off the mat and ripped off 44 points to win the $10 weekly prize. He catapulted from 10th to 8th place as a result.
Least Points for the week: Adam took a double loss on Saturday. Not only did he watch his son’s football team lose on Saturday, but he too took the ‘L’ with 23 points for the week. One could argue that staying at Wendi’s also counts as a loss.
Best Pick of the week: Marc and his Iowa State pick over Cincinnati was spot on. For the most part, everyone else got crushed.
Worst Pick of the week: It’s not that picking USC over Notre Dame was a bad pick. But, for those that put high points on USC (Sean, Cindie, Stemple, Evelyn, & myself) quickly went on suicide watch after Caleb Williams started throwing interceptions early and often.
Here’s how we rank heading into Week 8:
1.        Noah – 268 Points
2.        Wendi – 267 Points
3.        Mike -   261 Points
4.        Megan – 257 Points
5.        Adam – 252 Points
6.        David – 249 Points
7.        Sam – 245 Points
8.        Marc – 234 Points
9.        Evelyn – 227 Points
10.    Cindie – 222 Points
11.    Stemple – 218 Points
12.    Sean – 216 Points
Good luck this week!
