"Week 11 Review”
Written by Wendi
There were some scares over the weekend for top ranked teams. Indiana scored a touchdown (by a toe) with under a minute to go to put them in the lead against Penn State, Oregon skated by with a late field goal against Iowa. It took overtime for Louisville to beat unranked Cal. It also took overtime for Vandy to beat Auburn. Wake Forest beat 14th ranked Virginia. Wisconsin halted their 6-game losing streak to beat 23rd ranked Washington. This is what makes this great sport great.
In the battle for the Big 12, BYU traveled to Lubbock to face Texas Tech and the Red Raiders had the Cougars shut out until late in the 4th quarter and went on to win 29-7. BYU had three turnovers and looked unprepared for this highly anticipated matchup. But the good news is, both teams are still in the top two in their conference so if they both win out, they will meet again in the conference championship game.
Also in the Big 12, West Virginia hosted Colorado and it appears that Colorado does in fact have potential on offense. They had a total of 350 yards of offense but fell short on a late fourth quarter run. Mountaineers won 29-22. Colorado sits at 3-6 overall and West Virginia 4-6.
Kansas had the game in hand against Arizona but with 39 seconds left in the game, the Wildcats were able to march down field and score a touchdown that put them up 24-20.
Arkansas State had a total of six turnovers against Southern Miss who had two themselves. It was not a clean game and both teams combined for a total of 984 total yards. The miscues for the Red Wolves were too much to recover from and Southern Miss went on to win 27-21. Southern Miss is on a 5-game winning streak since 2015 and is undefeated in conference play.
Rutgers held Maryland to only 3 points in the second half and went on to win 35-20 for the Big 10 pillow fight of the week. Both teams are still looking to become bowl eligible. Rutgers has Penn State and Ohio State left on their schedule so it’s going to be tough to get one win. Maryland has Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State and needs two wins out of that.
Let’s go ahead and say this year’s Oregon team is not the same team as in previous years. Something is different and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Iowa took a late 4th quarter lead 16-15 but left a lot of time on the clock. Oregon got within field goal range and kicked a 39 yarder to regain the lead with only three seconds left. The Ducks won 18-16.
Is Bill Belichick finally turning things around at North Carolina? They won the last couple of games including the 20-15 win over Stanford Saturday night. They are still having some offensive woes but seem to be doing very well defensively. They have a tough test against Wake Forest coming up.
Louisiana took a big lead at the half against Texas State 35-17. The third quarter was stagnant offensively but Texas State scored 19 points in the 4th quarter for a late surge before running out of time. Ragin Cajuns won 42-39. Texas State failed both 2-point conversions in the fourth quarter. If they would have been successful, that would have put the Bobcats up by a point.
Let’s just skip the whole state of Florida. We all know Florida and Florida State lost.
On to the Pick’ems…
We had our first 50+ score in the contest and it was quite impressive since it meant a perfect week for Evelyn. I’m Still trying to figure out how she did it. Maybe dumb luck? Did the football Gods feel sorry for her? Either way, she is still 80 points from the top. I’m sure she’s content winning $20 which means she has won a total of $40 so far this contest. Lucky. I need to win some money. I’m buying a house and will be broke afterwards…HAHAHA!!
Adam was nice enough to let me take over 3rd place. Thanks Adam. But he and Cindie are still on my tail. They will need to keep their game up as well to keep vying for some money in the top 3 spots.
If Samuel and Sean continue to dominate, they will have first and second place locked up. 3rd place is a whopping 28-point difference to 2nd place. Sean was able to gain on Samuel this week by outscoring him by 11 points and it allowed Sean to only be 5 points behind Sam. This is going to get interesting.
Marc, Chris, and Mike M had the three bottom scores of the week and naturally they are also the bottom three in the overall rankings. Don’t count out Kim and Mike H as they are not out of reach just yet but need a major catastrophe to happen to the people above them.
David is ever so slightly trying to work his way out from the bottom. He needs a couple of more good weeks to make a major jump. We are getting down to the nitty gritty and some folks are running out of time.
Trending up: Evelyn, Wendi, Kim
Trending down: Adam, Mike H, Noah, Marc, Chris, Mike M.
Most points for the week: Mom nailing all 55 points for a perfect week gets her the $20 this week. I know she cheated, just need to figure out how….HAHAHA!!
Least points for the week: Chris picked up where he left off last week and barely made the effort to score 13 points.
Best pick of the week: Those who picked Louisiana over Texas State, Clemson over FSU and Kentucky over Florida.
Worst pick of the week: All of Chris’ picks…
Letters to the Editor:
So about the games….Texas is bac gonna stop it right there….NOPE
Florida and Florida State…no comment
The whole state of Florida sucks…except South Florida
Everyone’s chart line is evening out for consistency…time for someone to take a nosedive!
I Just hope it isn’t me.
Some folks at the bottom half aren’t who we expected to see there…what’s up with that?
What spreadsheet are you looking at? Looks normal to me.
How many bogus calls will be in the Georgia against Texas that favor Georgia? Can we make bets on who does the clapping? Oh, I mean timeouts!
If Texas is playing a close game, I am sure there will be a few bad calls that go the Dawgs’ way.
Would it have been better to just miss a third week of picks?
At least you would have had an excuse. 13 points this weekend hardly warrants an excuse.
